Hannah Pokotylo researched the history of Vogue magazine and the portrayal of women over the years.  She recreated a series of VOGUE covers dating from 1940-present, using her own Photos of RND students and original headlines.  Click on one of the thumbnail images below to view the gallery.

Molly Goodfellow created a WEB ART piece where she created characters and a fictitious story in the form of a blog with all original photography.  It’s a fascinating blend of creative writing, photography, and web design.  Click here to view the blog.

Ashlee Earle created a Claymation style Stop-Motion Animation inspired by Tim Burton.

Gr. 9 Aboriginal Art

Aboriginal Art is the theme of the Gr. 9 Visual Art course this year.  Recently, the Gr. 9’s were lucky enough to have a visit from two Aboriginal elders Tammy and Bernard.  The students participated in a drumming circle and learned about the spiritual traditions of Aboriginal culture.

Grade 12 Media Arts iPhone Skin Designs

The Grade 12 Media Art students have received their iPhone skins!  The original skins they designed were generously printed and donated by Gelaskins in Toronto.  We want to express a big thank you to them and their generosity.  Many of the students now have great Christmas presents to hand out to friends and family.

Grade 10/11 Visual Arts – Sculptures

The Grade 10 and 11 Visual Arts classes get a little messy with their new pieces. The class was to make a sculpture from clay. Many of the students decided to create a very natural sculpture, like a branch, a clam, or a crab. Other students decided to make sculptures that made use of positive and negative space, leaving holes in their sculptures. Some, have even decided to make their sculpture practical by creating a ring holder, a key rack and even a candle holder. It is great to see the amount of diversity in the work and the amount of detail that goes into the pieces.

Grade 12 Media Arts Students Design iPhone Skins

The Grade 12 Media Artists are getting a chance to apply their art skills in a new way this year. Thanks to the Toronto based company “Gelaskins” that is run by Kingston natives, the students will be receiving complimentary iPhone skins showcasing their own artwork. This gives the students a chance to apply their Photoshop and Illustrator designing skills in a real-life context and get the chance to create something that is really relevant to teenagers. The artists are putting their whole effort and creativity into this project and are creating not only digital art, but also mixed media art using additional mediums such as water colours. The designs will be completed by Monday, November the 18th and the skins should be arriving in December.

Shannon McCarthy uses Illustrator to create her design. Patterns, like the one Shannon is making are very trendy designs and many are top sellers on the Gelaskins website.

Grade 12 Media Arts – Gel Transfer Projects

Continuing with their photography experimentation, the Grade 12 Media Arts classes have been learning how to transfer their photos to unique surfaces using a gel transfer technique. Gel transferring involves spreading a layer of gel medium onto an object (a piece of wood, metal, a table, chair etc…) and then pressing an image or photo into the gel. Water is then used to dissolve the paper away but the ink from the image remains absorbed into the clear gel on the printing surface.  This technique often creates a vintage-like effect. A lot of the students have chosen something personal to them to print on like a chest or a record player. Other students have made something practical like, a sign that will hang outside of their art room.  There are so many possibilities with gel transfer techniques and it’s great to see the diversity in the final products.

Grade 12 Media Art – Photography

The grade 12 classes have been experimenting with photography and all of the different effects you can create with a camera.  The photos below have all been taken by students using a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.  The student’s individual styles continue to develop as the semester progresses and it is interesting to see the variety in subject matter they selected.

Grade 11 Visual Art – Watercolour Pieces

Grade 11 Students used pen on watercolour paper to create these beautiful images using detailed linework. Watercolour crayons were then used to add colour and washes to the work.   The results are astounding.  Many of these pieces are off to the Hotel Dieu Student Art Gallery!

Panthers In The Wild

Nature is inspiring the next generation of panthers at RND. The grade 9 students in Mrs. Latour’s Grade 9 art class enjoyed the last of the warm weather. They were instructed to find a piece of nature that inspired them and sketch it. The class worked diligently out in the sunshine and created some amazing drawings.
